Summer is finally here! Well, it’s been hot for a while but tomorrow officially marks the first day of Summer! Yay! I must confess, I really can’t wait for Fall again. It’s too hot for me this time of year. Regardless, I promised myself I would take advantage of finally working from home and having more free time to really enjoy the Summer. I came up with a list of things to do in the Summer for free or cheap!
1. Ride Your Bike On A Trail
Where we live, we have a gorgeous railroad trail that is perfect for riding your bike! Find an easy trail near you suitable for bikes and you can either go alone or with a friend! You can even get some cute photos of yourself on the bike! If you already have a bike, this will cost virtually nothing!
2. Backyard S’mores Night
This is absolutely on my list! This is not free if you have to get yourself the ingredients, but it’s relatively cheap for a fun night with friends! Light up the fire pit, turn on some string lights and music and just enjoy the Summer night!
3. Go To The Beach Or Lake
We don’t live next to a beach (road trip, anyone?) but we do have tons of lakes and they’re so much fun with friends! Sometimes we rent a pontoon boat, or take a kayak out. This is also virtually free but you may want to bring some games and food which if you don’t have will cost you a bit. However it’s a super cheap way to get some Vitamin D in!
4. Have A Picnic
You could spend money to make it look Instagram worthy with the basket and blanket, but really all you need is food and your friend! Sit under a shady tree (or in the sun if you prefer!) and just spend some time chatting and pretending phones don’t exist.
5. Hike
We basically live in Narnia, which means we’re surrounded by forests and mountains. There is never a shortage of places to hike here! You can literally hike anywhere near you and make it as long or short as you want! I prefer long hikes up to a peak for a gorgeous view of our town. It’s breathtaking and makes the hike worth it.
6. At Home Spa Day
This is a great time to pull out the tips in my blog post and have yourself a little spa day! You can do this with your girlfriends or give yourself a little bit of “me time”. This is such a great way to just enjoy relaxing and grooming yourself!
7. Camp
Backyard camping can be fun (and totally free by the way!) with a friend or two! You can use your fire pit as a fire and tell each other stories before trying to fall asleep! If you live somewhere where there is a lot of traffic, this will NOT be fun! I recommend finding your closest forest and go camp there! It usually costs a very small fee, but it’s worth it!
8. Game Night
I have always wanted to do one of these where I invited a bunch of friends over and we all just play a board or card game! Perfect time to whip out Cards Against Humanity or even just a classic Monopoly!
9. Star Gazing
This works best if you have a truck but you can just do this on the roof of your car if you don’t have one! If you DO have a truck, this is the perfect time to grab all of your blankets and pillows from home, drive somewhere secluded (no lights so you can see the stars) and just enjoy the absolute gorgeous view.
10. Local Festivals
Living in a smaller town, there are always free festivals going on during the Summer! This is a great time to just walk around and meet new people, try new things, and really just appreciate the area you live in by getting to know it a bit more! You can find local events usually on Facebook, or even the city’s website.
11. Watch The Sunrise
I really want to go for a hike at like 4am and make it to the top of the mountain and watch the sunrise. You don’t have to hike for this though, just sitting in your backyard and watching the day get brighter, the bugs wake up, the birds chirp, and the dewy grass shining is just so magical.
12. Run In The Woods
Not like you’re being chased, but like you’re a kid again. We lose touch with our playfulness and innocence as we get older, and this is a great time to just pretend you’re a kid again with no worries. Climb the trees, splash in mud, and run as fast as you can! Just enjoy being present and human without thinking about what you look like, how much you weigh, or if you’re successful enough in life. Just live.
13. Roadtrip
This will cost a bit of money for gas, but go on a spontaneous road trip to someplace new! Just pick a random place near you that you have never been to, and drive there! Walk around town and check out their scene. Enjoy the architecture of buildings and learn about the town’s history.
14. Go Bowling
Obviously this one is not free, but if you invite a few friends and split the bill between you all, it would be really cheap and you get to have fun with your friends! That sounds like a win-win to me!
15. Craft Night
Depending on the supplies you have at hand, this one may cost some money. I would invite a girlfriend over, pick a fun craft on Pinterest and challenge each other to recreate it! Whoever creates the better one, wins! I would include snacks and wine, obviously!
