Polka Dot Dress: How To Wear One & Not Look Childish

July 15, 2018 By Stephanie Hope No Comments

I want to start this off by saying that there is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to wear something that others may deem as “childish”. You can wear whatever you want and anyone’s opinion on it is not important. If you’re happy and feel confident, then that is all that matters. With that being said, some people don’t want to look childish in something. One of my favorite patterns to wear are polka dots. This can be seen like something younger people would wear and it can be difficult to make it look appropriately aged. Here’s one way you can wear a polka dot dress and not feel or look too childish!

Ragstock Co.

I chose this adorable vintage dress from Ragstock Co.! It’s unique and definitely has that retro flare to it. The length goes below my knees which give off a more mature vibe to it although I don’t usually go for this length at all! It’s tough being 5’2.

I usually just prefer wearing flats 100% of the time, but sometimes wearing something with a bit of height can help mature an outfit. I paired the dress with my wicker-style wedges from Payless Shoe Source. Wedges seemed like a good choice because they’re just much more comfortable and the wicker fabric matched my hat and purse!

I can’t express how much I love Ragstock Co and all of their clothes. It wasn’t until recently I discovered their vintage collection and it’s pretty amazing. They have unique individual pieces you’d find at a local consignment shop.

Adding the hat and purse to this look gave it a fun Summer vibe. Having smaller polka dots make it look much more mature, while the white buttons add a level of whimsical. Complete with a belt to help cinch the waist and give the dress more shape.  It looks like I’m waiting for the train to take me to a beautiful picnic! I bought both on Poshmark and you can see them on this blog post!

I literally just noticed my sleeves were uneven because I rolled them up! Now this photo bothers me..

Final Thoughts

This dress was so fun and bright, but it did feel a little bit large on my petite frame. Worn without the accessories, I didn’t like the way it looked. I felt a little bit like I was in an episode of Mad Men heading to work for the day. I highly recommend checking out their website- the clothing is so unique and affordable! This polka dot dress is perfect for a Summer or Spring day- maybe even Fall if you’re feeling sassy!

What do you think of this outfit? How would you accessorize this dress? Let me know in the comments!

i still can’t believe there’s a wee baby insid i still can’t believe there’s a wee baby inside my body right now ready to come out soon. just squirming around, hiccuping. it’s so unreal. the fact that my body just knows what to do despite spending my entire adult life convinced i 1. didn’t want a child and 2. wasn’t capable of being a (good) mother.

if i’m being honest, my fears came from my poor relationship with my own mother. i was raised to be afraid, to never feel like i would be good enough (spoiler alert: never was to her!) but to constantly try, and to feel like i had to buy love from people around me. now i know better. i know that i can just love my daughter unconditionally, help her see that i will ALWAYS be her safe space and never the thing to be afraid of, and that she never has to buy my love.

being a mom is something i never thought i would do, but i am ready to dive in and be the mother i always wanted growing up but never had. 💕 Photos are all from @jaceyanastasio ! #motherhood #pregnancyjourney #maternityshoot
I don’t see my stretch marks as battle scars, ti I don’t see my stretch marks as battle scars, tiger stripes, or a badge of honor. To me, they’re just skin stretching—because that’s what skin does. It doesn’t have to carry a deeper meaning or be a symbol of anything. It doesn’t have to be proof that I’m a mom to make me feel like a mom. My motherhood isn’t defined by the marks on my body; it’s in the love I give, the patience I practice, and the moments that shape this journey.

I don’t need to call my stretch marks anything to accept them, and for me, that’s freeing. They’re not good or bad, beautiful or ugly—they just are. A natural part of being human, of growing, of changing.

That being said, if giving them a name or a purpose helps you embrace them, that’s amazing! Every mom’s journey is different, and so is the way we process the changes that come with it. This is simply what works for me—letting my body be, without pressure to find meaning in every mark. No labels needed, no justification required. Just me, existing as I am. #pregnancyjourney #stretchmarks #pregnancyphotoshoot #maternityshoot
