Now that it’s officially Summer, it’s time to get outside and enjoy the weather! I’m going to be honest, I’m kind of already excited for Fall. I know, it’s insane because we just finished Winter! Summers can just be so hot, but regardless I am determined to enjoy every single beautiful day. This weekend I will be hosting a backyard Summer dinner party and I thought it would be great to create a little DIY backyard game for us to play before and after dinner! I’m going to show you today how incredibly easy (and cheap!) it is to create your own little ring toss game!
DIY Backyard Game: Ring Toss
The materials you’ll need for this DIY backyard game are:
- bottles, about 6 or 9 depending on the size of your crate
- a small crate that doesn’t completely cover the bottles
- paint (optional, but totally adorable)
- shower curtain rings
The total price of everything I bought was around $15, considering I got mostly everything at the dollar store. However, if you have any rings, paint, or crates hanging around you can definitely lower the price on this project.

The first thing I had to do was remove the handles off the bottles. These were the only bottles I could find at the dollar store, and I’m pretty sure they’re made for olive oil or something similar. If you manage to find some type of Cola bottles, those would be perfect! However, at $1 each for a simple DIY backyard game these were perfect!
Once I got those off, it was time to paint. I actually just used random paints I had around the house for this project! Pour the paint INTO the bottle and stir it around until the bottle is completely covered. I used watercolor paint so it was a little bit trickier to get it to slide around with enough coverage. For this, I would recommend acrylic paints.

Once you get them all painted, you’re basically done! If you’re feeling saucy, you can paint the actual rings themselves to make them more funky, but I opted to keep them white for this. Make sure your rings are big enough to fit over the bottles, but not too big that this DIY backyard game is just too simple to be entertaining!
That’s it! A really simple rainy day project you can take out on the next sunny day. This whole project took me about 30 minutes to complete and the results are just too cute!
If you do this DIY backyard game, show me the end results on my Instagram! You can also use the hashtag #thetinyherbivore and I’ll be sure to see it and post in my stories!
