This year, I have been focusing a lot on developing a skin care regime and just taking more care of myself. I have been partnering with a lot of different skin care companies to test and review their products for my readers. However, I have really wanted to try some DIY vegan facial scrubs! There are probably actual “recipes” for these, but I just thought of different types of scrubs I’d like to try and came up with these! My measurements are mostly eyeballed and maybe I shouldn’t even do this..
1. Cinnamon Scrub
- Cinnamon
- Sugar
- Coconut Oil
Cinnamon is known to reduce acne and blemishes on your skin as well as soothe dry skin. It’s also known as a complexion enhancer and diminishes fine lines. For this scrub, I used about 1tsp of cinnamon, 1/4 cup of sugar, and 1tbsp of melted coconut oil. I mixed these together, and saved it in a mason jar.
The smell reminds me of Fall, and now I can’t wait for Pumpkin Spice everything. I used organic cane sugar as well as organic coconut oil. I really do love the smell of this one and I’m excited to see any changes in my complexion.
2. Basic Scrub
- Cane Sugar
- Coconut Oil
- Essential Oil of choice
Obviously I needed to think of the most basic method of creating a scrub. Technically it would probably only be sugar and coconut oil, but for the sake of smelling amazing I added an essential oil. The one I added is a peppermint, which I really love. It would be a great scrub to use in the morning to wake you up!
Scrubs are really great for exfoliating and cleansing your face, and essential oils are honestly just optional. You can keep this really basic and unscented if you’re sensitive to strong scents. This one is nice, but I’m more excited to use different ingredients that have actual benefits to them.
3. Turmeric Scrub
- Turmeric Powder
- Sugar
- Coconut Oil
Turmeric is the Kale of 2018. Everyone is talking about it, using it, drinking it, sniffing it (?) and there’s a reason for it. Turmeric has an extensive list of benefits for humans. Turmeric can help reduce acne and acne scars from your face.
It has anti-inflammatory properties that targets your pores and calms your skin. It’s definitely been used to brighten your complexion which adds to the “scar reducing” benefit. I used about 1tsp of turmeric, 1/4 cup of organic cane sugar, and 1 tbsp of coconut oil. Seal it in a glass mason jar.
4. Brown Sugar Scrub
- Brown Sugar
- Coconut Oil
This is a lot like the basic scrub, except this time we’ll be using brown sugar. The reason for this is because brown sugar is more gentle on the skin than cane sugar is. This is perfect for people with sensitive skin who don’t want to have such a coarse scrub on their face.
I am a huge fan of brown sugar, and I love this scrub. It smells really nice and it feels great against my skin. I usually do prefer coarser scrubs, but I really enjoyed this one. I used 4 tbsp of sugar and 1 tbsp of coconut oil.
5. Apple Cider Vinegar Scrub
- Apple Cider Vinegar
- Sugar
- Coconut Oil
The idea of putting something acidic on my skin is actually pretty terrifying. However, I have read the countless benefits of doing apple cider vinegar toners for your face, so I was curious if it would be beneficial as a scrub as well.
Apple Cider Vinegar contains specific acids that are known to strip away dead skin, revealing a healthier and brighter complexion. It’s also really great for sunburns as it balances out your PH levels which will promote healing and reduce blistering of the skin. I used 1 tbsp of ACV, 1/4 cup and 1 tbsp of sugar, and 1 tbsp of coconut oil.
Well, now I have a fancy collection of scrubs to use this Summer! I’m really interested to see how long these will last as they are more natural, and if they’ll be effective at brightening my skin tone while reducing the redness! What are some DIY skin care recipes you love? Let me know in the comments!
